No doubt you've heard that this year's election cycle may re-define what we mean by democracy, or it may end democracy in America altogether. We are called by our Fifth Principle to uphold democratic process in our organizational decision making - while at the same time making room for an individual's right of conscience. What happens when individual conscience conflicts directly with democratic process? And what does democratic process look like in a world conceived as just and fair for all persons? And how does all that impact the problems that are imperative to solve if we are to survive as the civilization we know today? Together let's explore some possibilities for moving forward with our American experiment in a manner that allows us to solve the problems of our world.

Today, traditional religious leaders are silent on pressing issues as civil and political rights for all, poverty, the environment, immigration, gun safety, domestic terrorism, and support for democratic institutions. The ones who are addressing these issues are lay persons who are exhibiting the heroic virtue and self-sacrifice in their public lives on behalf of others that historically were characteristic of saints. Today new forms of the sacred or holiness are present in the public lives of secular saints. We just need the vision to see them and be inspired with hope. Dr. Brian Smith is a Professor of Religion emeritus at Ripon College where he taught for 33 years. He is a longtime friend of Unitarian Universalists.
