This is a community event happening in-person at Open Circle. A special screening, panel and conversation about the documentary, APART!
-Three moms. Four kids. 18 years. Since the beginning of the War on Drugs, the number of women in U.S. prisons has grown over 800%. The majority are mothers. In a Midwestern state caught between harsh drug sentencing and rising incarceration for women, three unforgettable mothers, Tomika, Lydia, and Amanda, return home from prison and rebuild their lives after being separated from their children for years. Their stories overlap at a new reentry program for women, run by Malika, an advocate formerly incarcerated in the same prison. Filmed over 3 ½ years, APART traces their steps as they reconstruct lives derailed by drugs and prison
-This is a timely discussion as the country, even our former governor known for tough on crime, Tommy Thompson says incarceration isn't the solution. Let's come together for a discussion about how we might move forward in Wisconsin, reimagining justice and creating pathways for healthier, safer communities, for mothers, children, and families.
-We will have popcorn for the documentary and pizza for the panel discussion with women, mother's from Wisconsin who have experienced similar journeys as the women in the movie. We will also provide childcare. If you are interested in joining us, please email Tamra Omen, Statewide Program DIrector of the FREE campaign- the Women's division of EXPO- Ex Incarcerated People Organizing! Tamra@expowisconsin.org
Here is a little youtube teaser for the film:
