10 AM Jon Shelton - Why Everyone Deserves a Good Life

Jon Shelton - Why Everyone Deserves a Good Life
    10 AM - 11 AM

    • Date: April 2, 2023

Meeting ID: 982 6046 5166 Passcode: 869270 For far too long, our politics and our culture have told us that not everyone deserves to have a good job, good healthcare, or the best education. This sermon explores the April theme of “resistance” through that question. Author and professor Jon Shelton argues that to have a fulfilling life, we need to resist the idea that only those who have the right “job skills” deserve a good life, and we have a moral obligation to fight for economic security for all of our brothers and sisters in NE Wisconsin and beyond. Question: What more can we do (as individuals or as a fellowship community) to resist the idea that some people are less-deserving of good jobs, good healthcare, or good education? Bio: Jon Shelton is associate professor and chair of democracy and justice studies at UWGB. He is the author of two books: Teacher Strike! Public Education and the Making of a New American Political Order and The Education Myth: How Human Capital Trumped Social Democracy. He is a member of the first ever Green Bay Equal Rights Commission and sits on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Labor History Society. He is also Vice-President for Higher Education of the American Federation of Teachers-Wisconsin.

RE Theme: The Path of Resisting by Breathing: Honoring Vesak (Buddha’s Life) - We explore the idea that breathing is a form of resistance by using it to focus and center, instead of becoming scattered and captive of the “monkey mind.” Buddhism is a powerful example of this with its emphasis on meditation, which is honored through the Buddhist holiday of Vesak, which celebrates the life of Buddha. 10 AM Rev. Jim: Spiritual Resistance

    Rev. Jim: Spiritual Resistance
    10 AM - 11 AM

    • Date: April 9, 2023

Meeting ID: 923 3957 5646 Passcode: 611944 The Christian Easter story of descending into a dark tomb of death and returning to the light of life is a great metaphor for spiritual resistance. As our society seems to be descending into a tomb of fear, anxiety and despair, Unitarian Universalism keeps resisting through belief in a gospel of optimism, justice and love. This is our Easter story. Discussion question: How do you stay spiritually healthy?

RE Theme: The Path of Resisting by Speaking Truth to Power: Honoring Easter - We explore how Jesus modeled resistance by “speaking truth to power.” We see this especially in the way he spoke truth to the powerful leadership of Jerusalem, which led to the events captured in the story of Easter. It’s all about speaking the truth, even when it is hard to do. Questions: Please contact Rev. Jim Coakley at jimuumin@gmail.com

RE Theme: The Path of Resisting by Sticking With It: Honoring Ramadan - We explore “sticking with it” as a form of Resistance. We try to stick with things and not give up when it gets hard. We resist giving up by enduring, by persevering, keeping going. With this in mind, we lift up Ramadan, a Muslim holiday. It’s a time, when children are old enough, they join with adults and fast during the daytime for 30 days. By sticking to this practice all day, Muslims resist the temptations of thinking selfishly and forgetting to put God first. It’s a great chance for us to think about how sticking with it can help us resist our temptations. Questions: Please contact Rev. Jim Coakley at jimuumin@gmail.com

Rev. Kelly Crocker: Resisting the Growing Edge
    10 AM - 11 AM

    • Date: April 16, 2023

Meeting ID: 912 0745 1741 Passcode: 419338 Theologian Howard Thurman told us to "Look well to the growing edge! For it is here we find the basis of hope in moments of despair, the incentive to carry on…“ Growing edges, may be places of hope, and they are often places and times that frighten and challenge us, places that fill us with deep resistance. Yet, no matter how difficult these edges might be, they are often places of deep possibility. what does it take for us to face and lean into our growing edges? Questions: What supports you in staying on the growing edge? Are there places in your life where you can see what is possible, not what's wrong?

Pleas join Mike Hayes Saturday for our first cleanup for 2023 which is our 18th year. We begin at 8:30 am near our Open Circle UU sign on highway 23 west of Fondy just beyond County Road I (eye). You will see our sign with an orange clean up symbol on it. Look for his blue car along our stretch of highway with the trunk up. You will find vests which you must wear (and return to my car when you have completed) and large bags you can help yourself to. Children must be 11 years old or in 5th grade. We usually complete the cleanup in around 1 hour. If the weather is inclement, Mike emails everyone by 7 am. So he will need your name and email address in order to do that. Please contact Mike at myk542000@gmail.com  or call at 920-960-5216.

10 AM Rev. Jim:The Rights of Nature

    Rev. Jim:The Rights of Nature
    10 AM - 11 AM

    • Date: April 23, 2023

Meeting ID: 917 1094 6747 Passcode: 879452 Environmentalism has always resisted the dominant cultural view that nature is merely a resource for humans for seemingly unending consumption. The Rights of Nature is a growing global movement to transform Indigenous values into enforceable laws that can protect the planet for all life. This movement could turn resistance into a new cultural and spiritual norm. Discussion Question: If the ecosystem were given legal and enforceable rights, how would you expect your life to change? Do you think you would need to give up anything? Would you gain anything in return?
