Rev. Dr. Michael Schuler: A Few Words in Favor...

Meeting ID: 963 8906 6044 Passcode: 554616 A Few Words in Favor of Heresy We’ll take a deep dive into the history of the concept, lifting up a few notables who wore the label as a badge of honor. We’ll also see how the charge of “heresy” has evolved from a serious capital offense to one that is seldom taken seriously. Unitarian Universalism was once the quintessential religious heresy. Is that still the case? Bio: Michael A. Schuler served for thirty years as the Parish Minister of the First Unitarian Society of Madison. He earned his BA in political science from Eckerd College, received his M.Div. from Starr King School for the Ministry, and holds a Ph.D. in the Humanities from Florida State University. He has conducted workshops on church growth and sustainability across the country and in June 2011 he delivered two major addresses and sermons at the Annual General Assembly of UU Congregations. In May 2009 Berrett-Koehler published Michael’s book, Making the Good Life Last: Four Keys to Sustainable Living. In retirement, Schuler continues to write and his next book, “Humanism: In Command or in Crisis?” is scheduled for release later this year. He also posts new essays on a regular basis on his website, www.maschuler.com. He is a life-long distance runner and practices yoga, Chi Gong and Tai Chi. He has been married to Trina for 49 years and their son, Kyle, manages a curriculum design team for a software company in the Twin Cities.

Come and participate and enjoy a presentation by Prof. Jonathan Brown. Discussing life in 1950 in FDL contrasted with life today. Jonathan Brown is a 1961 graduate of Goodrich High School. He was a summer intern at the FDL Commonwealth Reporter in 1963-64, an army veteran in Panama and Thailand, a Ph.D. in Latin American history, and a retired Professor at UT-Austin, where he lives. He is an author of 6 books published by the University of Pittsburgh, currently writing a book about life in Fond du Lac in the 1950's in collaboration with Scott Rodman, 1960 alumnus and other graduates.
