This summer my partner and I undertook a major renovation of our front yard. Unexpectedly, I learned quite a bit about managing expectations, my need for control, being patient, and the interdependent web. It has become a spiritual practice.

In western culture, nature tends to be viewed as a passive backdrop against which the 'real' stories unfold, not a central protagonist in our narratives. This is a dangerous delusion for both environmental and spiritual reasons. We need a fundamental shift in our perception of the balance of power between people and the planet.
